Armies on a Budget: A (Provisional) Buying Guide

Though the game has only just released, you may already thinking about what expansions you want to buy. Below I've created a list of each expansion you can buy with an estimation of how many army points that expansion includes. The lower army points value is the unit without any upgrades, while the higher value represents a heavily upgraded unit.

I've also included a few possible combinations of expansions that you could buy in order to ensure you can field an army of at least 800 points. You can acquire a full 800 point army's worth of miniatures for $200 or less; for $250 dollars or less you can get enough units to build a variety of different armies.

Imperial Expansions and Armies

Core Set, 378 to ~500 Army Pts for the Imperials ($90 MSRP)

Stormtroopers, 44 to ~90 Army Pts ($25 MSRP)
74-Z Speeder Bikes, 90 to 105 Army Pts ($25 MSRP)
AT-ST, 195 to ~250 Army Pts ($50 MSRP)

The Cheapest 800 Pt Army
Core Set
Stormtroopers
AT-ST
Total: $165 (617 to ~930 Army Pts)
With just the Core Set and these 2 expansions you already have enough to put a full army on the table. However, you need to use almost every model to achieve this and so your build variety is quite limited. Whether such an army is competitive or not is anyone's guess.

With these 3 boxes you can field a simple 800 point Imperial army

No Heavy Support
Core Set
Stormtroopers x2
74-Z Speeder Bikes x2
Total: $190 (646 to 890 Army Pts)
Another option that gets you a full army for less than $200. Most of the variety will come from choosing different upgrades for your Stormtroopers and Vader.

Some of Everything Imperial
Core Set
Stormtroopers x2
74-Z Speeder Bikes x2
AT-ST
Total: $240 (841 to ~1140 Army Pts)
With the Core and these 5 expansions, you now have enough units that you can't fit them all into a standard army, even without any upgrades. You'll have Vader, 4 Stormtrooper units, 3 Speeder Bike units, and an AT-ST, allowing you to explore a variety of different builds and for less than $250

"All In" with the Galactic Empire
Core Set: $90
Stormtroopers x4: $100
74-Z Speeder Bikes x2: $50
AT-ST x2: $100
Total: $340 (1124 to ~1590 Army Pts)
The Core Set and enough of each expansion to be able to field the maximum amount of each one; Vader, 6 corps units (Stormtroopers), 3 support units (Speeder Bikes), and 2 heavy support units (AT-ST.) This would allow you to build every nearly every possible army the Galactic Empire can build. Be advised though that as more and more expansions come out, you may find some of these to be surplus to requirements.

Rebel Expansions and Armies

Core Set, 295 to ~440 Army Pts for the Rebels ($90 MSRP)

Rebel Troopers, 40 to ~80 Army Pts ($25 MSRP)
AT-RT, 55 to ~90 Army Pts ($25 MSRP)
T-47 Airspeeder, 165 to ~195 Army Pts ($30 MSRP)

The Cheapest 800 Pt Army (Rebel)
Core Set
Rebel Troopers
T-47 Airspeeder x2
Total: $175 (665 to ~910 Army Pts)
If you don't have much interest in playing as the Empire, then these 3 expansions in addition to the Core Set is likely the least expensive way to get a full Rebel army on the table. This doesn't offer much build variety though, and likely won't be very competitive.

Some of Everything Rebel
Core Set
Rebel Troopers x3
AT-RT x2
T-47 Airspeeder
Total: $245 (690 to ~1055 Army Pts)
With the Core Set and these 6 expansions you'll have Luke Skywalker, 5 Rebel Troopers, 3 AT-RTs, and an Airspeeder. You should be able to build a good number of different armies, including some pretty competitive ones.

"All In" with the Rebel Alliance
Core Set
Rebel Troopers x4
AT-RT x2
T-47 Airspeeder x2
Total: $300 (895 to ~1330 Army Pts)
The Core Set and enough of each expansion to be able to field the maximum amount of each one; Luke, 6 corps units (Rebel Troopers), 3 support units (AT-RT), and 2 heavy support units (T-47 Airspeeder.) This would allow you to build nearly every possible army the Rebel Alliance has to offer. Be advised though that as more and more expansions come out, you may find some of these to be surplus to requirements.

Buying Multiple Core Sets?

If you are planning on collecting both Imperial and Rebel armies, then buying a second Core Set can be a cost effective option. Even though you won't be able to use the duplicate copies of Vader and Luke, you will still get 1 support and 2 corps units for each side. That's 6 units for $90 MSRP, rather than paying up to $150 for them separately.
If you only want to collect one faction, but have a friend who wants to collect the opposite faction, then splitting 2 Core Sets between you can also be a good way to go.
However, the expansion boxes for these units will almost certainly come with upgrades that are not found in the core box. Depending on how interested you are in competitive organized play, you might want to see exactly what these upgrades are before going the route of multiple Core Sets.
